During an initial day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” America's largest city, declaring “a new era” and an audacious commencement to his administration.

A Historic Figure

The young democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this is rare and rarer still is it that the citizens whose grasp the levers of change,” Mamdani stated.

Rejecting suggestions to be modest, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will lead boldly and broadly.”

Steering by Democratic Socialist Principles

Mamdani did not shy away from his core beliefs. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not abandon my convictions for fear of being called extreme,” he said to loud cheers.

The swearing-in was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over the status quo.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a agenda including:

• Free childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these programs may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Challenges

The new mayor also faces skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has sought to ease these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly surprisingly friendly.

The Fundamental Tests of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their ability in delivering essential functions: trash collection, curbing the rodent problem, repairing roadways, and ensuring reliable subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with murders reported.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
