It has been 30 years after the first Toy Story movie debuted, launching Pixar as a leading animation studio and bringing audiences to beloved figures like the cowboy doll (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), who are now famous worldwide.

Coming in 2026, the fifth installment is set to arrive. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, providing a brief look into the plot but leaving fans wondering how it will address the conclusion of Toy Story 4.

Bonnie's New Toy: A Frog-Shaped Tablet Spooks the Gang

The preview shows Bonnie — who inherited the toy collection when he left for college — getting a latest toy, one that alarms Woody, Buzz, and the crew. She acquires her initial digital gadget, and she is thrilled about it.

Theoretically, the frog-shaped tablet will come to life just like Bonnie's other toys. Still, the characters appear to consider it as a threat intending to supplant them, which it likely will.

The Cowboy's Comeback: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4

An element the trailer doesn't touch on is why the sheriff is back with his companions in the child's bedroom. The finale of Toy Story 4 saw him embark on a fresh journey with Bo Peep (Annie Potts), journeying with a fair and helping prize toys locate loving owners.

Certainly, Pixar will explain the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Seeing him show up in the familiar setting unexpectedly is somewhat puzzling, however. It also raises questions whether Bo Peep will have returned with Woody. And what about Duke Caboom (Keanu Reeves)?

Continuity from the Previous Film

Fortunately, some aspects are continuing from the earlier movie. The final act the cowboy did before setting off for his fresh path was hand over his sheriff badge to the cowgirl (the voice actor), entrusting her as the leader of the toy domain. The clip displays the insignia pinned to her outfit.

Hopefully she is still the key figure among the toys.
