Teacher Killed and Two Dozen Pupils Seized in Firefight at Educational Institution in Nigeria
Armed assailants have killed a teacher and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an assault against a female high school in Nigeria's northwestern region, authorities have confirmed.
The gang of attackers invaded the public educational institution for female students in Kebbi State's Maga area at around 4 AM local time on the beginning of the work week, police confirmed.
The assailants "confronted officers on duty in a shootout" before scaling the perimeter fence and seizing the students from their living quarters, authorities disclosed.
One member of staff was lost their life while safeguarding the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now undergoing medical care.
Observers recounted a sizeable number of assailants, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who came shooting randomly to cause panic.
Area inhabitants informed journalists that the attackers afterwards forced a number of girls into nearby bushland.
The authorities announced they had sent "extra specialized police forces, together with army members and local protection units" to the area.
A systematic finding and recovery effort is underway in surrounding forests and potential getaway paths.
In the past few years, learning centers in northern Nigerian regions have become frequent targets for armed groups, who routinely perform seizures to demand financial compensation or gain negotiating power with authorities.
