The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
