An Forecasting Platform User Earned $436,000 on Bets on Maduro's Downfall.
An individual made nearly half a million dollars by predicting the removal of Venezuela's president just before it was publicly declared, raising questions about potential gains made from confidential information of the US operation.
Sudden Shift in Wagers
Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that the leader would be no longer in control by the end of January rose in the hours before President Donald Trump stated on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been taken into custody.
A single trader, which joined the platform last month and made four bets, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $436K from a modest bet of $32.5K.
The identity is unknown. The user had only a blockchain identifier for identification.
Probability Spikes Before Public Statement
Platform data shows that traders estimated the likelihood of Maduro's exit at just 6.5% in the afternoon of the prior Friday.
However these probabilities had climbed to over 10% by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the morning of Saturday, suggesting a sudden change in market sentiment just before the social media post was made.
"This particular bet has all the characteristics of a trade based on confidential knowledge," said Dennis Kelleher.
A small number of other traders also earned large payouts from similar wagers.
Legal Questions Intensifies
Politicians are beginning to pay attention.
Proposed legislation introduced on the start of the week aims to prohibit public officials from making trades on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.
The Prediction Market Landscape
Forecasting platforms have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with participants able to predict everything from sports to politics.
Prediction markets faced scrutiny under the previous administration. However it has experienced less resistance during the Trump presidency.
Insider trading is against the law in the securities markets, but there are less oversight in the prediction market space.
An official representative for Kalshi said their site "explicitly prohibits insider trading of any form."
